In this course we will focus on a few key themes in Western political theory and examine how these have changed over time. These themes are: the human being; history; the State; sovereignty; community; institutions; freedom; justice; laws; epistemology (or, theory of knowledge); virtues; morality; and education.

Meet your instructor

All praise be to God. Dr. Zara Khan earned her Ph.D. with distinction in Political Theory and Comparative Politics from the CUNY Graduate Center, with certification in Critical Theory. She loves to teach and has been teaching for 15+ years. Dr. Zara has served for a combined six years as a Senior Research Fellow and Research Director at a prestigious American Muslim think tank.

Along with her husband Ustadh Abu Sakina Giovanni Herran, Dr. Zara has been blessed to sit with and learn from illustrious scholars of the sacred sciences of Islam. Her educational philosophy is encapsulated in the words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he said,

Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge in Allah from knowledge without benefit.” (Sunan Ibn Mājah 3843)
